About Us The Colorectal Research Fund is a medical charity dedicated to helping improve the health of people with bowel diseases, including Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS and Bowel Cancer. We exist to secure ground-breaking improvements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all forms of inflammatory bowel disease. Ultimately, our aim is to find cures for these distressing and debilitating conditions. Due to the major changes in the way medical research is funded by the NHS, we are now almost entirely supported by voluntary contributions. We aim to support high quality medical and scientific research, which meet the needs of those suffering with bowel disease. The research is carried out at St George's Hospital, London under the supervision and guidance of Professor Devinder Kumar PhD FRCS, one of the country's leading gastrointestinal surgeons. Each year more than 36,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK, that’s 100 people every day. Bowel cancer is one of the most curable if detected early and can often be cured through early surgical intervention. Surgery remains the most effective cure for most cancers and the majority of cancer patients will require surgery at some stage. Crohn's Disease affects approximately 60,000 people in the UK , about 1:1000. Between 3,000 and 6,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Research shows that the number of people with Crohn’s disease has been rising steadily particularly among young people. Ulcerative colitis affects up to 120,000 people in the UK , that’s about 1 in 500 Between 6,000 and 12,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. To ensure your money is used to support the best quality research and to ensure consistency of approach across the sector, all of our research is challenged under the scrutiny peer review. Peer review is an essential aspect of medical and health research and is an accepted part of academic research. It is the mechanism that facilitates the publication of primary research in respected scientific journals. Professor Kumar also presents his findings at National and International symposiums and conferences and his work has been published in over 100 medical and scientific journals. The Charity has been developed because the medical research in this subject is recognised as important by the public and will have and immediate and direct impact on patients with these diseases.
